Da Caribbean News Ledda
Gidday!
Traffic jams, high rise buildings, schedules, flashing lights and angry people.
What do all of these things have to do with the British Virgin Islands?! Nothing,
nothing at all.
At times our days here can be stressful, like when you're not sure whether
you'll make it to the bar for happy hour, or whether the hammock you're laying
in will continue to support your exhausted body, or the stress of worrying
if the tree you're lying under will drop a coconut on your head. Life here
is tough, so don't think for a moment that everyone out there has the only
stresses in life. We have our share.
The biggest
news this month has to be that Sarah is no longer working for BVI Yacht Charters.
She is now totally devoted to looking after Lucie from one day to another.
Sarah and Lucie are presently holidaying in jolly old England, which is quite
a contrast from the warm weather here. I think it may even be snowing which
will mean the first time that Lucie has ever seen snow. I don't remember ever
seeing snow so it's a shame we couldn't share the experience together. By
the time I have a chance to have fun in the snow, Lucie will be a competent
skier, a proper little snow bunny, but that's all right because I know how
much she is going to love it.
At home we are presently dealing with a goat dilemma. Poor Sarah has spent
many hours in our vegetable garden only to find out that the goats can now
jump clean over the four foot fence we have built, and chomp away at anything
that is above the ground. I know that this will only last until my fearless
puppy can look at them eye to eye. At the moment he just retreats like a coward
in a cloud of dust, but he will have his day, and his day is coming soon at
the rate he is growing.
Lionheart and I have been waltzing around this island chain nonstop virtually
since November. We have befriended some amazing people in the past months
and we are looking at one of our busiest years. People are starting to come
out of the wood work - they're coming from as far as California which is a
real effort for them due to the numerous connections they make to get here.
As the fear of Sept. 11 and this latest war seems to fade into the background
more and more people are reaching out for exotic locations. And it's nice
to see many business around town that were once struggling are now finding
their feet again.
The weather has gone from one extreme to another. Strong, strong winds one
day then torrential rains a few days later then back to calm waters and clear
blue skies. During the quiet moments we have been fortunate to discover even
more new locations, and discover even more dive sites. The more new areas
I find, the more I feel like a tourist to this region, knowing that there
is still so much more still out there to find.
During the last few months we have been confronted with some beautiful big
surfing swells. Unfortunately I have been on charter when they've hit, but
I have managed to get a few waves in whilst on charter. I have surfed the
most unusual places, places that are renown for their anchorages and still
water. I have surfed Brewers Bay, White Bay, Mosquito Island and some really
big days at Cane Garden Bay. I still haven't had the time to build any more
surf boards, but my time will come.
I'm still dragging these old bones around the squash court. The young guys
here love watching me sweat as I bounce from wall to wall. It seems in the
absence of waves, this is a good way to keep the fitness level up. The guys
here almost always beat me, but every now and then I shine through, showing
my former talent. Anyway, it's not about winning or losing (well that's what
I have to keep telling myself) it's about keeping the body moving to the edge,
finding ones limitations and learning to just stay inside that limitation.
Well my friends it's time to get ready for another busy month. If you're feeling
the heat, then may it rain to cool things down. If you're in the snow, may
the sun shine on your day and the stars light up your night.
Take care of one another.
Mobbsie
